lyrics

Yes I see you live out here in this land that still looks wild to me
You’ve got mines and chainsaws and cattle ranches and living here means that you’re free
So here you are with your wife and kids and you have debts you must pay
And the winter’s coming and it’s going to be hard but you know that you’ll find a way

Now here I am in this town back east, from my window I can’t see you
But I remember the times I’ve been where you live and the land it called to me too
Now some of the things that we say back here don’t sound that friendly to you
You don’t need any damn Easterners telling you the things you should do

Once came explorers who opened the way for the others to follow the trail
Now there’s mines and chainsaws and cattle ranches around cities so great they can’t fail
Tourists and treehuggers get in the way of the plans you need to put through
The mountains, they live forever, at least they look like they do

Still some things are bigger than all of us, bigger than the things we can build
The mountains and sky and the wildlife they’re all things not to be killed
See no one can ever own the land, at least not the way that we think we can do
So you with the mines and chainsaws and ranches, remember you’re a caretaker too

Once came explorers who opened the way for the others to follow the trail
Leaving behind crowded cities back East, heading west to look for the Grail
We can’t get back the things that we’ve lost, we’ve already seen that it’s true
The mountains they live forever, at least we can hope that they do
