The sun came out for once today With a feeble light like it didn’t know what to say Nice to know that someone up there understands The way things can be after days of gray I feel like a year ago I thought that I’d gone farther down this road This must be a circle ‘cause you know I can’t believe I could work so hard and end up walking slow REFRAIN: I’m just trying to earn my wings I’m just trying to earn my wings I’m just trying to earn my wings So I can fly away some where Sometimes we come to fear the worst When it happens we still feel like we’re cursed Someone out there tell me why it has to be that way Someone show me a bubble that won’t burst A man I don’t know smiled at me today He was just passing by, and I didn’t know what to say What is it in a person makes him do such a thing When it’s easy just to the look the other way REFRAIN: Last line: So I can fly away some day Sometimes it doesn’t seem so bad Sometimes it seems like I’ve been had And lately as I wander with my lantern held up high How come everyone I meet out here is sad Maybe I will get there after all Maybe it’s the journey that’s the call I still have my moments when it’s hard to see the sky When you’re walking you don’t have far to fall REFRAIN: Last Line: For the day I have to fly away

Another morning Put on my traveling clothes Another coffee, another few miles down the road Now I wonder Is this the only way And where does this road go anyhow All I have are my boots and all my dreams Dreams will keep me and lead me to my home Soaring eagle Let me follow your flight Show me the way that's straight and true Mighty oak trees Give me shelter from the storms Let me make my nest in your arms All I have are my boots and the roads they've seen Fading into memories that'll follow me home All I have are my boots and all my dreams Still my heart breaks with every step I go All my friends They walk the same roads I do Holes in their shoes and holes in their hearts And all my friends They sing the same songs I know Their songs will keep them and follow them home Everyone forgotten Everyone who I've done wrong Everyone I long for They're all here with me But still I'm alone Mother moon Look down in the night Paint me a new world with your light Brother wolf Your song sings of something That my heart knows but cannot say All I have are my boots and all my dreams Dreams will keep me and lead me to my home All I have are my boots and all my dreams Dreams will keep me and lead me to my home Another morning Put on my traveling clothes Another coffee, another few miles down the road

Prairie Wind 04:55
A hawk is flying beside the road Scouting the grasslands in the morning sun And she lights upon a fencepost As I go driving by A long way down this road I’m on A long way from the sky-scraped towns I’m looking for a feeling That only the wild wind knows Long before the wagon trains And horses came upon the plains Mariah ruled this wilderness The spirit that shaped this land Grass as far as the eye can see Bending waving constantly Alone out on the prairie You’re small and you cannot hide From the spirits of a wilder west Riding on the wind Prairie wind, blowing along Blowing me home Wars were fought here long ago Now the Indians and the buffalo Are fenced in little corners Of the land they used to roam And the cattle now run amuck Cowboys ride in pickup trucks And the tourists rarely see the land Except when they get lost I saw a cowboy on his pony Heading for the high country Looking for a campsite In the fading summer light And I was headed back into town Another motel, and I thought to myself I’d like to be where he’ll be When the sun comes up again ‘Cause a lot of kids have the frontier in them And some of us just don’t grow up Though the wild west is mostly TV now And a trail of broken dreams But sometimes far away from town Listen close and you’d hear the sound Of riders in the swaying grass Hoofbeats on the wind It’s the spirits of a wilder west Riding once again Prairie wind, blowing along Blowing me home

Standing high in a field in Nebraska Surrounded by fields of corn, wheat, and rye I'm staring up at the wheels of a Buick Encircled by tail lights that reach for the sky What in God's name did he think he was doing Planting old cars in a field by the road Old Buicks and Chevies and Plymouths and Caddies Standing like Stonehenge, just why I don't know In the shadows of Carhenge I roast in the sun Not a cloud to be seen anywhere in the sky Building circles of old rusty autos Is something I hadn't considered to try What in God's name did he think he was doing A circle of cars where the corn had once been The owner is gone now, his work still lives on now Will he ever come back to see Carhenge again My odometer clicks as I head north to Chadron Still shaking my head at the thing I have seen Do they dance there in circles all lit up with candles Or is it just simply a tourist trap scheme? What in God's name did he think he was doing A circle of cars where the corn had once been Old Buicks and Chevies and Plymouths and Caddies Will they ever be towed to the junkyard again

Gentle Song 03:07
I want to sing you a gentle song To chase all our sorrows away A song just for us to capture the moment A song for the things we can’t say I want to sing you a gentle song In the night when there’s no one to hear Just you and me and the words in the air The tune floating up to our ears I don’t want to make you cry ‘Cause we’ve had enough tears before And they’ll come back again I don’t need to make you laugh ‘Cause there’s all the time in the world For laughter A moment like this is so hard to find It’s a feeling that’s often ignored A moment of peace that is taken for granted The calm that comes with the storm Tomorrow will be just another day We’ll fight the same battles again And the world going ‘round makes it hard to remember The song that you hear in the wind You don’t need to say a word Or try to do anything To make it better It’s enough that we are here Sometimes that’s all that we need Just listen I want to sing you a gentle song To chase all our sorrows away A song just for us to capture the moment A song for the things we can’t say I want to sing you a gentle song In the night when there’s no one to hear Just you and me and the words in the air The tune floating up to our ears

I don’t believe in angels Though it’s a comforting thought And I don’t think there’s really a devil Except for ones we might have bought The things that happen in our lives Aren’t always due to somebody else Though sometimes I think we get some help You can’t do everything yourself Refrain: But I believe in a song I believe in the flight of a hawk I believe in the beauty of a snow covered field I believe we can do more than just talk I believe that somewhere there’s a place For everyone to belong I believe I’m gonna make it someday And I believe in a song I don’t believe that church on Sunday Is the way to my reward I don’t believe that you’re better off Just because there’s more that you can afford I don’t believe that truth is owned That’s not what sets us apart Just because they say they’ve seen the light Doesn’t mean that I’m here in the dark (REFRAIN) Bridge: Maybe there is a spirit out there I can’t believe it’s all that concerned With whether we’re jumping through all the right hoops It’s what we do with what we have learned I don’t believe it’s always hopeful Sometimes it doesn’t look good If we’re not careful we could all end up gone I’d avoid that if I could Maybe all we can do is pretend In the moments that look like the worst If day is really gonna follow the night We’ll have to get through the darkness first (REFRAIN)

Yes I see you live out here in this land that still looks wild to me You’ve got mines and chainsaws and cattle ranches and living here means that you’re free So here you are with your wife and kids and you have debts you must pay And the winter’s coming and it’s going to be hard but you know that you’ll find a way Now here I am in this town back east, from my window I can’t see you But I remember the times I’ve been where you live and the land it called to me too Now some of the things that we say back here don’t sound that friendly to you You don’t need any damn Easterners telling you the things you should do Once came explorers who opened the way for the others to follow the trail Now there’s mines and chainsaws and cattle ranches around cities so great they can’t fail Tourists and treehuggers get in the way of the plans you need to put through The mountains, they live forever, at least they look like they do Still some things are bigger than all of us, bigger than the things we can build The mountains and sky and the wildlife they’re all things not to be killed See no one can ever own the land, at least not the way that we think we can do So you with the mines and chainsaws and ranches, remember you’re a caretaker too Once came explorers who opened the way for the others to follow the trail Leaving behind crowded cities back East, heading west to look for the Grail We can’t get back the things that we’ve lost, we’ve already seen that it’s true The mountains they live forever, at least we can hope that they do

Take me down to the water now Take me down to the lake Tell me 'bout the freighters And the stories in their wake And all around them fishing boats And long before that canoes Filled with furs and voyageurs That we learned about in school Detroit it was a fur trade post Duluth it was one too From Grand Portage to Montreal Mackinac and the Soo Some of them they grew up fast Some of them stayed small They stand watch on the Great Lakes shore As the freighters pass them all Many men have seen them Many know their pleasure Many men have perished On their way to safer harbor How many are the shipwrecks That add up to their legends How many fear their power When their fury strikes again My grandpa used to work the boats I never got to meet him My mother never saw him much He was always gone again He saw the wind whip up the waves Saw the lakes freeze over Just like those brave French voyageurs Two hundred years before Now I stand along the shore And I watch the boats go by Seen the surface glass on sunny days Rough when the storm clouds fly I don't know where men get the strength Or the courage to go sail them But standing here I understand Why they go when the Great Lakes call them Many men have seen them Many know their pleasure Many men have perished On their way to safer harbor How many are the shipwrecks That add up to their legends How many fear their power When their fury strikes again Take me down to the water now Take me down to the lake Tell me 'bout the freighters And the stories in their wake And all around them fishing boats And long before that canoes Filled with furs and voyageurs That we learned about in school

Put your paddle into the water Make the canoe float along Put the paddle in again The river whispers like a song Look at all the life here If you’re quiet they’ll be there Deer on the bank, heron in the shallows Fish and frogs rise from their lair Refrain: Flow like a river Watch it go by Flowing right through my life Till the stars tell me goodbye If we’re floating far enough On the left a cottage lies Where they come and spend the sunsets Watch the river ‘neath fiery skies The closer we get to the lakefront The more boats there will be Fishermen vieing with the gulls For the catch of the day (Refrain) Not far, there is a river Has a concrete bed to hold it I’m sure that someone knows just why But there’s nothing natural to it The Cuyahoga burned once Other streams are almost dead We deserve the mess we make But can’t we have rivers instead? (refrain)

Superior 05:16
Woke up late this morning Nothing new to see A freeway back behind my house Apartments next to me Rush off to the factory Put eight hours in Drive home through the dirty snow Tomorrow's the same again Oh-woah-oh-oh, Oh-woah-oh-oh, Oh-woah-oh-oh, Oh Superior Oh-woah-oh-oh, Oh-woah-oh-oh, Oh-woah-oh-oh, Oh Superior I long to be with you Listening to the radio Watching the TV Hearing all the things they say Scares the devil out of me "Nowhere is it different" That's what some people say "There's too much of a good thing here To throw it all away" (refrain) Last night about midnight I looked out at the stars They were shining down upon the lake Despite the passing cars And I looked out at the buildings But they did not seem the same All I saw were rocks and trees and waves The city so far away Oh-woah-oh-oh, Oh-woah-oh-oh, Oh-woah-oh-oh, Oh Superior Oh-woah-oh-oh, Oh-woah-oh-oh, Oh-woah-oh-oh, Oh Superior I'm coming home to you (repeat refrain)
