A hawk is flying beside the road
Scouting the grasslands in the morning sun
And she lights upon a fencepost
As I go driving by
A long way down this road I’m on
A long way from the sky-scraped towns
I’m looking for a feeling
That only the wild wind knows

Long before the wagon trains
And horses came upon the plains
Mariah ruled this wilderness
The spirit that shaped this land
Grass as far as the eye can see
Bending waving constantly
Alone out on the prairie
You’re small and you cannot hide

From the spirits of a wilder west
Riding on the wind
Prairie wind, blowing along
Blowing me home

Wars were fought here long ago
Now the Indians and the buffalo
Are fenced in little corners
Of the land they used to roam
And the cattle now run amuck
Cowboys ride in pickup trucks
And the tourists rarely see the land
Except when they get lost

I saw a cowboy on his pony
Heading for the high country
Looking for a campsite
In the fading summer light
And I was headed back into town
Another motel, and I thought to myself
I’d like to be where he’ll be
When the sun comes up again

‘Cause a lot of kids have the frontier in them
