lyrics

Take me down to the water now
Take me down to the lake
Tell me 'bout the freighters
And the stories in their wake
And all around them fishing boats
And long before that canoes
Filled with furs and voyageurs
That we learned about in school

Detroit it was a fur trade post
Duluth it was one too
From Grand Portage to Montreal
Mackinac and the Soo
Some of them they grew up fast
Some of them stayed small
They stand watch on the Great Lakes shore
As the freighters pass them all

Many men have seen them
Many know their pleasure
Many men have perished
On their way to safer harbor
How many are the shipwrecks
That add up to their legends
How many fear their power
When their fury strikes again

My grandpa used to work the boats
I never got to meet him
My mother never saw him much
He was always gone again
He saw the wind whip up the waves
Saw the lakes freeze over
Just like those brave French voyageurs
Two hundred years before

Now I stand along the shore
And I watch the boats go by
Seen the surface glass on sunny days
Rough when the storm clouds fly
I don't know where men get the strength
Or the courage to go sail them
But standing here I understand
Why they go when the Great Lakes call them

Many men have seen them
Many know their pleasure
Many men have perished
On their way to safer harbor
How many are the shipwrecks
That add up to their legends
How many fear their power
When their fury strikes again

Take me down to the water now
Take me down to the lake
Tell me 'bout the freighters
And the stories in their wake
And all around them fishing boats
And long before that canoes
Filled with furs and voyageurs
That we learned about in school
